Economics Student Society
The Economics Students’ Society (ESS) would like to extend a warm welcome to all new and continuing students studying at The University of Adelaide in 2010. ESS caters for students of all backgrounds and interests, whether it be socialising, career opportunities, leadership development, or to help you develop the tools for world domination. What ever it is, the ESS is here to help you.
The society is focused on informing students about economics and finance issues or events that maybe of interest, to assist members in leadership development and communication through a variety of activities from seminars or guest speakers from top universities or industry leaders to BBQ’s and cocktail parties.
Studying economics enables students to make better decisions in all walks of life. It empowers students by teaching the constraints of human rationality and by providing the tools to make optimal choices. Why do people overeat in all you can eat restaurants? What is this sub-prime crisis that is plastered all over the news? All of these questions can be analysed and answered by using principles of economics. Problem solving and decision making skills are, however, worthless without the ability to communicate effectively. Developing student competencies, communication skills and career networks for life during and after university is a focus of ours. Did you know people fear public speaking more than death? That is, people would prefer being in the coffin then making the eulogy!
Building a network for communication between students, alumni and prospective employees is a must. (This is the fun bit!) In doing so, the ESS have several events arranged for 2010, including competitions, career information sessions, annual alumni event and the usual cocktail parties. Members will also be invited to attend, listen to, get up close and personal with guest speakers in the industry. Members will be entitled to free BBQs throughout the year, but don't forget, there's no such thing as a free lunch! You maybe asked to help out occasionally too, but come along, meet the crew and fellow students. Join in, get involved, it’s worth it. You’ll meet new future colleagues or friends and you will notice the opportunities open for you as the year unfolds.
If you are interested in becoming a member please join the email list using the form below or if you would like to learn more about the ESS, feel free to visit our stall during O'Week or any other event. You can also contact us via email at adelaide.economics@gmail.com.
