Works for: Reserve Bank of Australia, Sydney
Honours required for job: Yes
Work: Although the RBA is primarily responsible for monetary policy settings, the work is very diverse. I have worked on the Chinese economy, looking at trade, prices, property markets and how Chinese economic conditions affect Australia. More recently, I am working in domestic fi-nancial markets, looking at banks’ balance sheets, system liquidity and funding instruments. It’s clear that what you do really matters to the bigger picture.
Career prospects: The RBA provides a lot of training, which builds on the skills and knowledge you acquired in honours (the RBA are currently supporting me through further study while I continue to work full time). Working at the RBA sets you up for a long-term career as an economist or financial analyst, at almost any institution in the world– many people from the Bank have gone on to work at the Federal Reserve, Bank of England, IMF, World Bank or prestig-ious consulting firms.
