The Honours Degree in Economics is a one-year program of full-time study designed to provide thorough research training.
This program is for students who wish to undertake further education at the Master and Doctorate levels or wish to pursue research-intensive careers in the departments and agencies of federal and state governments (Treasury, Reserve Bank, Productivity Commission), and in the private sector (finance, consulting).
You will have an opportunity to work with and learn from experienced researchers who have been published in national and international peer-reviewed journals.
Why study Honours?
Honours is a selective and competitive process. It demonstrates that you:
- Have the perseverance and self-discipline to succeed
- Have the ability to complete advanced coursework
- Have the skills to independently formulate a research problem
- Have the ability to bring together the concepts and knowledge you have acquired in your undergraduate degree to apply them into a substantial piece of work – your thesis.
What scholarships are available?

Emilie Bailey, Deloitte Access Economics, Canberra
Work: Honours required for job. As part of the Macroeconomic Policy and Forecasting team, I assist with producing and analysing forecasts of major variables in the economy with our in-house macro-econometric model. I prepare detailed reports for a range of public and private sector clients outlining expected macroeconomic conditions and employment projections at a global, national, state and regional level.
Career prospects: There are ample opportunities to work across teams within Access Economics, across offices within Australia’s capital cities, and with the broader Deloitte financial consulting service teams. There are also opportunities to work overseas with the firm.
